Where were you this weekend…Whole Foods, where else?
Morning, noon and night, Whole Foods is where you can find me (and everyone else in the Roaring Fork Valley). I have seen countless friends at my trips I’ve made to Whole Foods, some people who I haven’t even seen in years. Whether they’re scoping out the delicious produce, or waiting in line to check out, everyone I see in the store has a grand smile on their face. One particular run-in was with my friend Nick, who now works in the WF meat department, where he told me, “My mood lifts every time I come into the store.”
Currently, each time a customer uses reusable bags for their groceries, they have the option of redeeming the 10 cent bag discount, which will help save customers money, or donating the saved money to Basalt Elementary School. Several times a year, WF will hold community days where five percent of that day’s net sales are donated to a local nonprofit or educational organization. Whole Foods has committed or contributed to nearly a dozen area nonprofits, including the Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club, Lift Up and The Buddy Program.
The hyper-local décor seen throughout the store echoes a retro-ski and environmentally friendly feel. All of the produce bins are made from beetle-kill pine tress, the reclaimed tin ceiling is from a deconstructed church in Salida, Vintage Ski World supplied vintage skis that cover the Allegro Coffee area and provide backdrops for chalkboard signs. Everywhere you look in the store, you see the Roaring Fork Valley integrated in the interior design.
And of course, you cannot overlook the food. Organic and fresh produce, local meats, cheeses and…cupcakes? Midland Baking Company is providing an exclusive line of cupcakes for the Roaring Fork store. The Colorado cupcake selection includes choices such as Aspen Avalanche, Carbondale Caramel Crunch and Roaring Fork Rocky Road. The majority of the beef comes is locally-raised grass-fed beef from Crystal River Meats in Carbondale. The list goes on and on…
Funny way to build community, but it sure does.
